First Snowshoe Walk

The First Snowshoe Walk is a ceremony practiced by the Cree in the Eeyou Istchee territory of James Bay, Quebec. It is a ceremony to celebrate a child's first walk on snowshoes, usually occuring around the age of five or six. The walk takes place early in the morning, when the children are led by an elder for a short journey on fresh, untrodden snow. Family and friends gather at the site to witness the right of passage.
